Welcome to our TNR resource page!

The Spay & Neuter Center of New Jersey is a proponent of Trap, Neuter, and Return programs.  Although TNR does not solve our stray cat problem, it is the best solution we have at this time for community cats.  Our spay/neuter clinic provide the same care for our feral friends that we would for our own pets and we provide additional discounts for feral cat caregivers.

Scheduling:

We know that coordinating TNR efforts can be tricky.  If you are only trapping one cat at a time, you may call us in the morning to let us know you are bringing a cat in.  If you have multiple cats to trap at once, please call us ahead of time so we can tentatively schedule an appointment.  This way we have set aside the time to take care of multiple cats.

***We do have a trap available for use- a $50 deposit is required for each trap and will be returned when you bring the trap back.

The Procedure:

Prior to anesthesia, we will visually evaluate the cat for any signs of illness.  They are kept in a quiet room away from our other patients until we are ready to perform the spay or neuter.  We will sedate these cats with an intramuscular injection so that they are anesthetized with minimal stress to the cat, and optimal safety for our surgical team.  We perform a thorough physical exam on the cats once they are sedated.  From that point on, surgery and pain management is the same as for our other patients.  We administer Rabies and Distemper vaccines as this may be the only time in its life that the cat receives a dose.  We will also evaluate the cat for parasites and wounds, and treat as needed.  Once our feline patient has recovered enough to be able to sit up, they are placed back in their trap or carrier for transport home.  We recommend that you keep feral cats in a dark, quiet, sheltered place overnight (e.g. your garage) and release the cat the following day.  For more information, click on New Patient Center.

Ear Tipping:

At The Spay & Neuter Center of New Jersey we practice ear tipping of our feral cat patients.  This is the easiest way for caregivers to identify cats that have already been spayed or neutered.  It is safe and effective and prevents the stress of needlessly transporting and anesthetizing a cat that has already been sterilized and vaccinated.  See the following position statement from www.alleycat.org.

Pricing:

TNR pricing is $80.  This includes anesthesia, exam, surgery, pain medication, ear tip, Rabies and Distemper vaccines.  It also includes a capstar treatment if the cat has fleas.  Additional fees apply for pregnancy, undecended testicles, wound care, parasite treatments, and FeLV/FIV testing.

Responsibility of a Colony Caregiver:

Becoming a caregiver is a large responsibility.  You need to monitor the colony for signs of disease, new cats (that need surgery), and to make sure that their body condition is adequate (they are getting enough food).  In addition, you have to coordinate a surgery schedule, set up traps, and make sure you have adequate funds for their care.  We understand how emotionally and physically difficult your work is.  Below are a list of links that may be helpful if you are thinking of taking on the task or if you need help:
